Thank you for stopping by today.
WELCOME!
If you are new to my little piece of the internet, you may have discovered that I have passion for motherhood photography and capturing baby’s first year. You might also be a bit curious as to why I serve my clients with printed proofs while so many of my fellow photographers do not. For years, I’ve been providing my clients with this type of portrait experience and I honestly wouldn’t do things any other way and here’s why…
“The joy and satisfaction it was to complete each page of their books and getting to touch and hold each photo and manipulate them in such a way to tell their stories was more than just a hobby for me.”
Tonya Riggs
My desire to preserve my clients memories through printed proofs stems from a very personal place for me. I have had the honor and experience of being a mother for 27 years. When my children were all very little, film was very much the status quo. I would take pictures of my three little men with my little 35mm canon point and shoot film camera, then develop them into 4 x 6 prints at my local drug store. The anticipation of waiting one or two weeks was normal. I could hardly wait to get those images back so I could hold and sift through them and then scrapbook and document their sweet little moments. The joy and satisfaction it was to complete each page of their books and getting to touch and hold each photo and manipulate them in such a way to tell their stories was more than just a hobby for me. I knew all along that some day, they would be looking through these albums with their children and what a magnificent little piece of legacy they would have to share with them.
My professional journey as a photographer however, started about 15 years ago. It was a completely different era for film and digital imagery. Quality images through phone cameras had not been perfected yet but the digital camera revolution had taken the world by storm! Everyone seemed to be getting a basic point and shoot digital camera and there was still the need to get those images printed and that led to the rise of Shutterfly and other online companies which offered easy to order prints and online album making. There was still a desire among most people to print their images and to do something with their images whether that was making that photo card for Christmas, make a book or just having those loose prints to shuffle through or gift family near and far with. So naturally, my earliest offerings to clients were digital only and I delivered all their images on CD to them. Remember CD’s? I was doing what everyone else was doing at the time as it was all such a lovely novelty. Like many photographers at the time were thinking…they will print their photos…how hard can it be…they will have these digital negatives forever….but WE were ALL wrong about that.
“They were just too busy and wanted and needed my help and it was if a light bulb went on in me. I knew exactly how prints could serve them in the most powerful and meaningful way.“
Tonya Riggs
As my photography business grew, so did the world’s technology. The rise of social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram which created an entirely different mindset in how people were viewing and sharing their imagery. Everyone seemed to want that quick and fast image experience because that is what they were getting with their new smart phone camera feature. With those images, they were getting to share those images immediately with family and friends online which lessened the desire and priority of printing their own digital images. Around year 5 of my business (about a decade ago) I started hearing returning clients come back to me with the same story. They had not printed out any of the images I had procured for them. They felt embarrassed and frustrated as they had no formal plan to organize or even know where to begin printing out their children’s previous years of milestones I took for them. They were just too busy and wanted and needed my help and it was if a light bulb went on in me. I knew exactly how prints could serve them in the most powerful and meaningful way.
“Printed images for my clients serve as their negatives for tomorrow. “
Tonya Riggs
That is when I started offering printed proofs of all their purchased digital files and I HAVE NEVER LOOKED BACK! Not only do my clients have tangible prints to hold and cherish and take home with them from their session, but they get to see first hand what quality, archival, and professional prints through labs like BayPhoto look like. Printed images for my clients serve as their negatives for tomorrow. My signature ordering process guides clients in choosing their images with a greater sense of intention and purpose. They can still share their digital imagery online with friends and family but I know with all my heart and soul that the legacy of the printed images, albums and framed artwork I am providing for them will far outlast any CD, USB or digital file that may be around today or tomorrow. The fact is, we just do not know the longevity of digitals at all. Some technology experts are saying right now that the JPEG images today will most likely be replaced by another form of filing system in the near future and that we will be in a constant evolution of change as we will have to learn different ways to convert those files and store them in a completely new way.
